What We’re Reading Now
Michael Mullin of OA Physical Therapy Center in Portland, Maine recently shared with us a great article that discusses forced exhalation rather than valsalva maneuver during maximal force productivity. Click here to read more…
Breathing In The Gravity Field…...written by Aline Newton, is the latest article added to our recommended reading list for Postural Respiration. To read this article, click here! To learn more about Aline Newton, click here! Hamstring Muscle - To Stretch or Strengthen?
Check out the latest article written by Dave Drummer, DPT from the Hruska Clinic. This article goes over the role that the hamstring muscle plays in pelvic stabilization and the positive and negative effects of stretching and strengthening. This article is a great article to handout to individuals who would like to read more about one of the fundamental concepts of PRI. To read this article, click here! Something to Read Over the Holidays…Breathing pattern disorders, motor control, and low back pain written by Chaitow is the latest article being passed around PRI. This article discusses the effects of breathing pattern disorders resulting in a variety of negative psychological, biochemical, neurological and biomechanical influences. “Breathing pattern disorders (the extreme form of which is hyperventilation), automatically increase levels of anxiety and apprehension, which may be sufficient to alter motor control and to markedly influence balance control. Hyperventilation results in respiratory alkalosis, leading to reduced oxygenation of tissues (including the brain), smooth muscle constriction, heightened pain perception, speeding up of spinal reflexes, increased excitability of the corticospinal system, hyperirritability of motor and sensory axons, changes in serum calcium and magnesium levels, and encouragement of the development of myofascial trigger points – all or any of which, in one way or another, are capable of modifying normal motor control of skeletal musculature.” To read the rest of this article, click here! Physiotherapeutic Treatment for Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
Ron Hruska has been sited again in the Brazilian Journal of Oral Sciences. “Physiotherapeutic treatment for temporomandibular disorders (TMD)” written by Grossi and Chaves discusses considerations that need to be made when treating TMD. “One of the most important approachs for TMD physical therapy treatment must be the modification of craniocervical biomechanics and its effects to posture as an etiologic or perpetuating TMD factor”. We are proud and honored to share with you an article published by Holly Spence, PT, PRC. “Case study report: postural restoration: an effective physical therapy approach to patient treatment” was published in the Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management journal this summer. This article summarizes Postural Restoration as an alternative approach to physical therapy: “The purpose of this case study is to inform specialists that there are different approaches to physical therapy treatment intervention”. To access the complete article, click here! Left Forearm Pain - A Case Report
Check out the latest case report written by James Anderson, MPT, PRC and the staff at The Rejuvenation Center! This case report discusses the treatment of left forearm pain using only PRI techniques. “By addressing the postural asymmetries across his rib cage we restored proper biomechanical position and relationships between the rib cage, scapulas, and upper extremities”. To access this case report, click here! Temporomandibular Disorder and Dysfunctional Breathing
“Influences of Dysfunctional Respiratory Mechanics on Orofacial Pain” written by Ron Hruska was referenced in an article printed in the Brazil Journal of Oral Sciences titled “Temporomandibular Disorder and Dysfunctional Breathing”. This article discusses the relationship between respiratory muscles and TMD and presents studies covering respiratory mechanics, breathing syndromes and overuse of accessory inspiratory muscles. Acetabular Femoral Internal Rotation written by Lisa Bartels, DPT is the latest topic being featured in the Performance Conditioning newsletter. This newsletter is a publication that goes out to coaches and athletes involved in cycling, volleyball and baseball. This is a great article that describes what AF IR is, the importance of it and how to achieve it! To access the article, click here! Another Great Article…
Karin Shelstad, ATC and Karen Jiran, MPT, PRC brought our attention to a fantastic article…“Musculoskeletal and neuromuscular interventions: a physical approach to cystic fibrosis” written by Mary Massery, PT, DPT. This is an article discussing the effects that early physical intervention can have on the physical development of children with CF. In this article, Massery provides a case study demonstrating how early intervention can play a vital role in slowing down the disease process. Although the case study was very interesting, I found the most informational area of this article to be found in Massery’s explanation of internal and external pressures on the thoracic and abdominal cavity by using a “soda pop” can analogy! To access the entire article, click here! “The Sick Scapula”
Want to read a great article that discusses types of scapular patterns? Check out “The Disabled Throwing Shoulder: Spectrum of Pathology Part III: The SICK Scapula, Scapular Dyskinesis, the Kinetic Chain, and Rehabilitation” by Burkhart S, Morgan C, and Kibler B. The authors discussion of scapular mal-position and it’s relationship to pain patterns is very similar to the content presented in Impingement and Instability. Although the treatment approach is different from PRI, the muscles identified as being weak are main muscles of the BC chain. To get a copy of this article, contact us! Hip Pain - A Case Report
James Anderson, PRC and staff at The Rejuevantion Center have been busy wrting case reports based on common diagnosis. This case report discusses severe hip pain covering the patient’s history, diagnosis, assessment and the treatment techniques used. This is a great resource for clinicians to use when educating the general public on how Postural Restoration is used in treatment. To access this complete case study, click here! Understanding Postural Symmetry
Understanding Postural Symmetry to Improve Performance and Prevent Injury is the latest article written by Lori Thomsen, PT, PRC. This article addresses postural asymmetries of the cycling athlete that lead to pain and dysfunction. This article is one of a four part series that will be written by the staff at the Hruska Clinic for a local company called Performance Conditioning Inc. Check out this article here! Latest Article
Laurie Jung, PRC recently sent us a fantastic article from the Scoliosis Journal discussing idiopathic scoliosis and asymmetry. Kotwikci T, Walczak A and Szulc A. Trunk rotation and hip joint range of rotation in adolescent girls with idiopathic scoliosis: does the “dinner plate” turn asymmetrically? Scoliosis 2008 Jan;3(1). This article provides some interesting comparisons between trunk and hip rotation in adolescent girls with and without scoliosis. Symmetry of the range of hip joint rotation was found only in 16% of patients with scoliosis and in 35% of healthy controls”. To access the complete article, please click here! In Case You Missed It
We are often asked to explain what Postural Restoration is and how it is different from other therapies. Although we most commonly answer this question through conversation, it is nice to have a piece of literature that is simple enough for the common person to understand. An official publication of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia published an article called Postural Restoration written by Kyndall Boyle back in 2006. This is a fantastic article that introduces and summarizes what Postural Restoration is. This article also provides an overview of the history behind PRI, and Postural Restoration Certification (PRC). We have used this article several times to help educate all individuals on PRI!
