Visceral Manipulation and Postural Restoration
We recently attended an in-service given by John Macy, PT, PRC on Visceral Manipulation and Postural Restoration. This was a fascinating in-service on how visceral manipulation can be incorporated into a PRI program. John describes visceral manipulation as “the use of only minimal force to enhance the inherent motion of a particular organ or tissue in order to restore the body’s ability to self correct dysfunction.” Following the in-service, we asked John where we could get more information and he suggested checking out The Barral Institute. Another great resource is the book, Visceral Manipulation, written by Jean-Pierre Barrel. Great Book!
We are passing around another great book here at PRI! Dental Management of Sleep Disorders written by Attanasio and Bailey is a highly recommended book for those of you studying sleep disorders. If you are attending the Rest Integration course in April, this would make a great resource! If you are interested in purchasing the book, you can do so HERE! What We’re Reading Now!
The newest book purchased by PRI is “Essentials of Facial Growth” written by Enlow and Hans. This book covers the nasomaxillary complex, the neurocranium and foundation for the face, facial form and pattern, the plan of the human face, an overview of craniofacial imaging (especially if you are working or going to work with gnathic orthopedic minded dentists), and maturation of the orofacial neuromusculature. We highly recommend this book! You can purchase the book HERE! Recommended Book
The Neuroscience of Human Movement by Charles Leonard is the latest book that Ron Hruska can’t put down. “The book is designed to help students bridge information from basic science courses with clinical courses such as therapeutic exercise, sports psychology, neurological rehabilitation, motor control and motor learning. Clinicians will benefit from recent neuroscience/motor control information that directly relates to the rehabilitation of their patients and clients.” As you can see by the tabs, Ron has found this book to be “worth the read”! The Brain that Changes Itself
The Brain that Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science written by Norman Doidge is a highly recommended PRI reading! This book was discussed throughout our Interdisciplinary Integration course this past weekend and it was decided that this book is a must have!! To learn more about this book, click here! Here is what the New York Times had to say about it! Rehabilitation of the Spine - A Practitioner’s Manual…
...written by Craig Liebenson is the latest book being passed around PRI. This book is a compilation of interdisciplinary treatment approaches to improve clinical outcomes. With our first annual Interdisciplinary Integration course soon approaching, this book couldn’t have fallen into our hands at a more appropriate time! Also, we were delighted to find that in Chapter 17 of this book, Rehabilitation of Breathing Pattern Disorders, Ron Hruska was referenced. In addition to Hruska being referenced, many other familiar references were used to complete this book…Hodges, Chaitow, Janda, De Troyer, Travell, etc… There are several websites that sell this book, we feel it is definitely worth having around! You can preview some of the pages from this book by clicking here! What We’re Reading
The Dental Physician written by Aelred Fonder, DDS, FRSH is the newest book in PRI. Published in 1977, this book provides great insight into treating the patient as a whole “system” rather than treating “dental issues.” “Contemporary medical evidence of the unity of the human person abounds, but to present it would be to write our book in one chapter, for it is this concept which is the basic idea of the present work. The dentist is not dealing with teeth or peridontal tissue alone; he is dealing with a united soma, and more especially, he is treating the total person.” - Chapter One A decendent of the late Aelred Fonder recently responded to our request for information about purchasing this valuable book. Dr. Felker has made this book available by calling him directly at 815-625-0346. The proceeds are directed to Dr. Fonder’s wife. The cost is estimated at $100 but we’ve found the contents to be priceless.
