Course Description
Our 4th Annual Interdisciplinary Integration course brings together six highly regarded professionals to share their expertise on the subject of airway and the anterior neck. This symposium will include interactive discussion on the anatomy, neurology and mechanics of the airway and the anterior neck. Emphasis will be place on how to manage the nasal and oral airway both during sleep and upright function. Upper airway obstruction and influences on respiratory and laryngeal function, from asymmetrical torsional alignment of the cranium, neck and thorax, post-traumatic vertigo, cervical trauma, postural pathomechanics and respiratory imbalance will be offered.

Marina Gilman, M.M., M.A. CCC-SLP
Marina Gilman brings more than 30 years experience as a voice teacher (singing and speaking), and performer and 15 years as a Guild Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner to her work as speech language pathologist with voice specialization at the Emory Voice Center, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Prior to joining the Emory Voice Center staff, she was the speech language pathologist with voice specialization at the University of Chicago Voice Center, Loyola Voice Institute, and Bastian Voice Institute, Chicago. She regularly presents workshops in voice and movement at national and international professional conferences. In addition she has presented workshops nationally for actors and singers in professional theater and opera companies. Ms. Gilman taught voice and speech at the DePaul University Theater School and the School at the Steppenwolf Theater Company, Chicago and as a member of the voice faculty at Cornell University and Syracuse University.
Michael Hoefs, DDS, DABCP, FAACP, FADI
Dr. Michael Hoefs graduated from the University of Nebraska, College of Dentistry in 1979. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Craniofacial Pain and a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International. Dr. Hoefs is a member of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, Academy of Pain Management, American Dental Association, Cranial Academy, and International Association of Orthodontics. As a strong believer in professional growth, Dr. Hoefs has completed 3,000 hours of continuing education in orthodontics, pain management, and sleep disordered breathing. He is in full time practice at the Craniofacial Pain Center of Nebraska.
Ron Hruska, MPA, PT
Ron has a strong interest in myokinematic and biomechanical influences on postural and peripheral adaptation patterns. His 32 years of clinical experience assists him with direct patient interventions based on specific examination and evaluation data that best reflects neuromechanical stability, trunk symmetry and respiratory balance. He lectures extensively and consults regularly with physicians, physical therapists, optometrists, dentists, and other health care providers across the United States and internationally on patterned postural position and pathology and his approach of restoring symmetrical balance using PRI principles. His reputation has led to consultations with collegiate and professional athletes from a variety of arenas, states and countries. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Division of Physical Therapy. He currently is a member of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association and the American Physical Therapy Association. Ron serves as a Biomechanical Consultant to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through the Division of Athletic Medicine. He has patented Prism and Priori PRI Aquatic systems. He is co-founder of PRI Vision, LLC. He is Director of the Postural Restoration Institute ® and consults and practices at the Hruska Clinic, Restorative Physical Therapy Services, and PRI Vision Clinic in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Jonathan A. Parker, DDS
Dr. Jonathan Parker is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. From 1983-2000, Dr. Parker provided care in a practice focused on management of TMD and orofacial pain. In 1992, he expanded the practice to include treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Since 2001, he has focused his practice on dental sleep medicine.
Dr. Parker is a part-time faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and American Board of Orofacial Pain. He is a charter member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He was the recipient of the academy’s prestigious distinguished service award in 2003. Dr. Parker is on staff or a consultant to six different sleep disorder centers in the Minneapolis -St. Paul area. In addition, Dr. Parker has lectured internationally on the role of the dentist in the evaluation and treatment of snoring and sleep apnea using oral appliance therapy. He is well known for developing innovative techniques and protocols to improve patient care and treatment success in dental sleep medicine. He has authored a number of research articles and abstracts evaluating the effectiveness of oral appliances used for treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Heidi Wise, OD, FCOVD
Dr. Wise graduated Summa Cum Laude from - Troy State University in 1994 with a Bachelor’s degree in Math & Chemistry. She continued her education at Southern College of Optometry where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1998. Dr. Wise had experience in primary care optometry before opening a private practice with expanded services to include vision training programs, helping children and adults gain better vision skills to maximize performance in school, work, and athletics. In addition, Dr. Wise has provided onsite care to patients of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, directing vision rehabilitation programs for patients suffering from strokes and brain injuries. Her post graduate training includes 200+ hours in the areas of vision development, vision and learning, and vision rehabilitation. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, Nebraska Optometric Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development, and Heart of America Contact Lens Society. In 2011, Dr. Wise received Certification as a Fellow in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD). She is one of only three optometrists in Nebraska who has achieved this status. Dr. Wise is a co-founder of PRI Vision and currently practices in Lincoln, NE using neuro-optometry and PRI Vision science to decrease patterns of vestibular and postural dysfunction and imbalances.
