On Evidenced Based Approach…

I have a couple of therapists who have attended your courses and are now quite passionate about this approach and are having good results, however, there are some physicians we work with that are not buying into this apporach.  They do not understand why shoulder patients are blowing up balloons and why you need to work on pelvis function with a cervical patient.  We have tried to provide some basic information but they are asking for research or evidence based literature on this treatment approach.  Is there a reference you could provide that would help me justify postural restoration?

This question we get asked a lot…where’s the evidence?  There are a number of good referenced articles, listed on our website, regarding the Zone of Apposition and Hyperinflation.  Unfortunately, some individuals you may work with don’t gravitate to the thorax because they don’t usually read about or consider the role of the thorax’s form and function on the shoulder girdles or the accessory respiratory muscle on the autonomic nervous system.  However, you have to recognize there are many physical therapists who don’t either.  The best bet, if they appreciate the need to reduce upper trap and scalene activity on the upper trap and scalene activity on the 1st, 2nd ribs and scapula, is the Buford article, JOSPT, 2002.  The Kouwenhoven article on analysis of pre-existent vertebral rotation in the normal spine, Gilbert on Hyperinflation and the body, Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, July 1998, or the many good articles listed under Zone of Apposition, by Paul Hodges, Mead, Reid, DeTroyer, Exetenne, Flynn, Goldman, Vleeming, etc…

The question is, how willing are they to spend time on this subject…because you will not see this kind of writing and research in orthopedic journals today, unfortunately.
