On Orthotics at a Younger Age…What are your thoughts on shoe/foot orthotics at younger and younger ages when you see the pattern and can tell the arch of the feet are dropping? Regarding orthotic application at younger ages is a good question. I’ve asked Dr. Paul Coffin who is familiar with the left AIC pattern to guide us…so look forward to information on our website in the next few weeks. Most children have flat feet until age 5. Prior to 2 years of age there isn’t enough information regarding a pattern – foot or pelvis. After they turn 2, toddlers need good heel counter and shoes that don’t bend in the middle…sometimes shoes that are hard to find. If they wear the inside of the heel out or down after 2 years of age, they will need orthotics for appropriate motor learning. If they toe in or toe out and you rule out femoral-tibial torsional issues they will also need good shoes, possible orthotics because they now compensate with the hips. I usually try with these kids to develop symmetrical pelvic femoral control as much as possible using PRI techniques with good parent involvement before I consider orthotics. |
