On PRI in the Geriatric Population…I am interested in finding out how postural restoration can be integrated into the geriatric home health population. More specifically, we are creating an integrated balance program, and I really believe that there is a place for the postural restoration approach in a geriatric balance program. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Have you had any previous PT’s integrate a postural restoration approach into the geriatric homebound population? I do believe there is a place for PRI application in geriatric rehab or home health. Single leg stance activity, AF stability, FA orientation, step overs, step throughs, step arounds and walker assisted hamstring and femoral rotation, drills and AF IR with trunk rotation activities would all have a possible place in your integrated balance program. As you are developing your programs you could introduce and include ventilatory, frontal plane and reaching (thoracic flexion) concepts to increase thoracic stability and improve cranial/cervical freedom. Organized geriatric vestibular and upright stabilization activity that include PRI concepts of maximizing left ZOA, left AF IR, right trunk rotation, left thoracic abduction, specific serratus anterior involvement, etc. would be awesome. I don’t believe I know of any organized PRI programs specifically designed for the geriatric homebound, but I know there are PT’s who apply PRI concepts with this kind of patient. |
