On the Reverse Squat…

“I read your article on the reverse squat in the Performance Volleyball Conditioning newsletter.  I am wondering what steps I should take if a girl cannot do the reverse squat to begin the exercise.  Do I have her go down as far as she can while keeping her heels on the floor and work from there?”

When you have an athlete that cannot do the reverse squat, I would let them hang onto something sturdy to help support them.  A door frame works well…have the patient stand in the middle of the door frame and have them grasp the frame with each arm for support.  Ask them to squat down as far as they can keeping the weight through the heels.  Another idea is to use a desk or table for support.  Have them grasp the edge of the table for support and stability.  If they can squat all the way down, with support and with the weight through their heels, great!  However, sometimes the athlete will try to hold themselves up with their shin muscles. They can only squat down as far as they can without feeling their shin muscles.  The last recommendation I would give you is to have the patient use the wall for support.  This is a great way to get started!
