On The Use of Tongue Depressors to Treat TMJ…I have been using tongue depressors to treat TMJ dysfunction on the left. The right BC chain is now neutral, his jaw opening has increased and the clicking has decreased. Do we continue to use the depressors on the dysfunctional side? Do we add side to side movement of the jaw? His dysfunctional side is the left side but he can’t move his jaw to the right because of pain. I would continue to add tongue depressors to the left side but it doesn’t sound as if you have recaptured his left TMJ disc. He would benefit from muscle relaxants and if you can get him to 30-35 mm, enough for an impression, a splint to help reduce the muscular tension and restore centric condylar position might help as well. |
