On Type III shoulder blade position…
For the Type III shoulder blade the manual states the scapula is abducted and retracted. I’m confused because I think of abduction as protracted and adduction as retracted. How can they be both abducted and retracted? You are not confused! Abducted is closer to ‘protraction’. With the scapula downwardly rotated around the sagittal axis and externally rotated around the vertical axis the patient has a tendency to ‘slightly’ retract the scapula. ‘Slightly positioned in retraction’ reflects orientation of the trunk (i.e. left upper torso rotation would reflect left retraction). |
